I have a couple of those in my scrounge box. I know they'll come in handy sometime. If I mount a box on the rack, it would be a good use for them, as you did.

Dead thread and all that but Range Rat that's perfect! Thanks for posting this. Saw some smaller knockoffs on AMZ but reviews said shallow thread engagement, checked eBay and found the big mega sized.
I'm in!

To avoid “inquisitive” fingers unscrewing the top drill a suitable hole right though it’s thread and insert one of the black pop pins that keep the plastic panels of our bikes in place - best done out of sight on the underside. Also provides added peace of mind!

Kritou, that's exactly what I was thinking! I'd just got a multi-pack of them with some different sizes and thought I'd find some other uses for them. (one on the Trail was weirdly mangled).
After considering what's going in it, there's the possibility that the pin could get screwed up or pop out if things rattle around inside. Might make it hard to get out.
So maybe, with the lid in it's fully closed position, drill a hole through both pieces and have a pin pushing out from the inside that engages when fully closed. Push the pin from the outside to start unscrewing and it should be offset enough by the next turn to not engage. Was thinking about a thin strip with a pin at the end mounted internally. Similar to a kayak or tent pole spring clip except secured to the inside with a couple of rivets rather than standard "sprung" mounting.
