A guy on another website I visit owns a European Car Repair Shop and also owns a Boxster . He regaled the complexities/oddities and long hours spent changing the water pump. It took so much work and time he decided to replace several things that were working fine hoping to not have to remove the body again any time soon.
He said they're great and fun cars but they will eat your checking account up , that's why resale is low.
He's not wrong. A couple of years ago the Water Pump Seized-up on my GF's Boxster S. A local European car shop did the repair, along with several other things which made sense to do at the time and the bill was just under $3K. Now the car has a couple of error lights on, is due for service and a few other small things. She's budgeting $2K for it. A few years ago a Clutch replacement cost her $1,500
They are very fun cars to drive, very fast. I'm not really a Sports Car guy but even a neophyte like me can feel like Mario Andretti in that car! Which is why I think a lot of people get in trouble with them.
As far as resale values go, at least in my area (where everything seems to be more expensive) early Boxster's still seem to be getting between $10-15K which is comparable with Corvette's of a similar year and condition. Though I would expect that the Corvette would be less expensive/less involved to repair, I mean in a Corvette the engine is right there under a hood LOL!
