Dang, the Carnation gang with their hybrid plastic/metal milk crates lookin good! That metal rim is over the top and begging to be chromed.
Someone always has a brother who's friend met a guy that heard that this one guy got arrested for having a milk crate with a milk company name on it. I can neither confirm nor deny these rumors.
What I CAN confirm is that any law enforcement officer is going to be too busy looking at the bike and wishing they were riding one rather than looking for milk company branding.

There's a side of me that could mod my crate in a million ways, well maybe not THAT many, but honestly I can easily think of a hundred cool things to do to it. But then I go out there and it works so good just as it is.
I had some bungee straps from the Gold Wing and to keep the raccoons out of trash, got a couple of those in it. My favorite mod/not-a-mod is a couple pieces of 12 gauge stranded that an old guy gave me at the gas station when I first got the crate installed.
He was interested in the bike and I'll usually indulge anyone who wants to talk about it, saw me trying to secure my Dew and pulled the wire out of his trunk. I use it wrapped through a couple holes to secure a Diet Dew when I get one. I'll probably never get rid of it, never know when you'll need a piece of wire!

More supposition: I believe a milk crate is a theft deterrent. Lots of thefts are crimes of opportunity. Bad guy just out and about and sees something that catches their eye.
An upscale thief would look at a milk crate and, well I hate to say it, probably laugh. They want something with resale value, not ultimate practical value. The contents of the crate may even inherit this judgement and be safer than those in a proper top box.
A hobo thief would be problematic. A hobo would appreciate the pragmatic nature of a nice milk crate and rightfully assume any contents would be of a similar bent, tear the crate off, and leave the bike for dead.
(full disclosure, I've lived like a hobo for a while so not judging. Not a hobo thief though!)
So maybe a slight deterrent from upscale thieves.

Other rando crate thoughts:
I'm not nearly as flexible as I used to be so I grab the crate when mounting/dismounting.
Took my 20v leaf blower to work the other day with it strapped in the crate pointing rearward. Really, really wanted to leave it on to see if it gave a little boost but didn't want to end up on a "World's Goofiest..." YouTube video.
It's IP67. Just the crate, not the contents.

Where did you say that Trail 125 rally is? ;)
Probably in the middle of nowhere in 100 degree weather? I'm in!
Interesting side note: your license plate accurately predicts the first 2 words of everyone who sees you ride by. Usually something like "My LRD, that is one beautiful bike!" or similar.

I figure most folks who see the "MY LRD" plate assume it refers to the man above. However, many of those familiar with either the Trail or this forum know the real meaning is My Little Red Donkey. When people ask about the bike, I proudly explain why I gave it that name.
