ok took the bike out on to trails today with its stock tires. It was not too bad on the hard-packed ground with light leaves, but it was hell trying to keep the bike straight on any sandy areas. actually went over some whoopie dos and the front tire slid out and I made a sharp right turn into trees. do the more aggressive tires really help? what make and size?

Any knobby tire will be an improvement in sand, but still squirrely. I am running 2.75-17 IRC TR1 tires now, similar to the Shinko SR241 or Kenda K262, and they do alright in sand. 3.0-17 should do even better since more tire width helps distribute the weight to keep the bike floating rather than sinking in the sand.

I have Shinko 241s, 2.75 x 17's. They do help a little, but not as much as I had hoped. When I get in deep sand, I deploy my left and right stabilization struts (legs), and paddle my way along as needed. I also have a CT 90 with full knobby tires. The full knobbys aren't really any better in that situation. A lightweight, powerful dirt bike does much better.
