I'm doing 13/42 currently, but I am putting a 45t rear on today or tomorrow to try. I live in steep terrain and I am wanting a bit lower that the 13/42 gives although its not terrible. I'm also 225# and carry extra gas and a little gear on my bike all the time. I'm at 5200 feet above sea level and go up from there. I assume that pass is going to be extermely high and you are going to want all the help you can get especially if you are loaded down with some gear. I think what I will end up doing is leaving the 45t rear on and then I can swap the front from 13t to the 14t if I want some more cruising top end or back to the 13t if I do a trip that is mainly off-road in moutainous terrain. The 14/45 gives essentially the same ratio as the 13/42. The front is easier to swap because you don't have to remove the rear tire. You would just have to adjust it for the difference in chain slack.

Update: I put the 45T rear on today with a 13T front and I think I found my happy place:)! Buzzing around the steep streets in the hood the bike was much less boggy and was more responsive overall. I was able to hit 52+ mph (gauge) on the flat no problem and had more in it. The engine still did not scream or over rev with this combo. I need to slap my gps on it to find out how far off my OD is. Then I hit the dirt single track trails. It had been raining a lot so the ground was a combination of loose/wet sandy soil, mud and loose gravel. Climbing the steep hills the bike ate it up. In 1st it feels like a jeep, truck, or SUV in 4-low. Immediate throttle response and very torquey. One of the steep hills you have to approach slowly because the trail makes a sharp 90 degree turn at the bottom of it. Once you make the turn you have to give it some "pepper" to get up it. With the stock gearing I had to duck walk the bike. With the 13/42 it would make it up w/o assistance, but was a bit boggy and the rear tire did not have enough torque to grind up the loose parts. Now the rear tire will spin some when given power and climbs great.
