If I can avoid the pull that Vespas have on me, this would be a better option.

The Vespas I witnessed on the SCB were super cool, but they seemed maintenance intensive for that particular use. My friend, Larry, was supporting me with my truck, and Mototote rack. He recovered two Vespas and brought them into the next town. Both went down with drive train issues. I have always seen Vespas as commuting to the coffee shop in Rome, with a hot Italian chick on the back.

I think the ADV 160 will be a fine bike for the SCB. I had it out today and put 26 miles on it. I enjoyed the bike very much.

I'd love more details on this if you have it. Was it more like they had shorter intervals, or was the maintenance more painful to do?

Me, too. I was thinking maybe maintenance issues could have more to do with how many were participating than the bikes just generally being unreliable. The more of a particular brand, the higher probability of failure.

Of course, comparing a Honda to a Vespa probably goes about the same as comparing a Honda to an Italian anything.

One solution is to buy both an ADV160 and a Vespa. I like that idea. Let me run that by the wife real quick 😁

There is a "The Damage" thread and some post ride recap threads on the Scooter Cannonball Riders Forum that detail some of the mechanical failures and pains encountered. Worth reading through for anyone interested in those types of details out of general curiosity or future SCB planning.

I'll have to sign up to see that, but I think it will be worth it.

I really don't have any details. On the first recovery, Larry asked if it would be ok to use my truck. I told him he didn't even have to ask. We don't leave anyone behind. We stopped to help another Vespa in a state park in Oklahoma. He had a fuel issue. I asked if he had his maintenance manual... Blank stare. We blew out the FI and it started right up.

At the hotel at night, I did get the idea that the Vespa crew circled their bikes like wagons fending off the indians and did group maintenance. Which is a good idea, but I was a little punchy after 15 hours in the seat most all the trip, so I may have been seeing things. 😂
