Lowered fuel economy.

Hello, fellow Trail Enthusiasts! My fuel economy has suddenly started to drop. The first few tanks I was getting around 115-125 mpg. I would go about 140 miles without the need to refuel. My last tank I got around 70mpg. I chalked it up as a fluke and filled her up. Well it looks like Im on pace to another 70mpg tank. Im not sure what the issue could be. The trail seems to be running fine. I havent changed anything. Dont get me wrong, 70mpg is still great, but when it was doing so much better before, it makes me nervous that somethings wrong. Anybody have any ideas on where I could check or what the issue could be?

Did the gas sit for a long time between fill ups? 70 mpg sounds like extremely low MPG if your bike is stock or close to stock, but one or two data points also aren't a lot to work off of. If you haven't hit the second 70 mpg tank I would be wary of trusting fuel capacity based on the gauge. I've found mine to be a bit imperfect, especially since the bike can be overfilled and that isn't represented beyond the fullest bar position, and it reads differently on the side stand than upright. Maybe fill up again, do the math on the refill, and see how that stacks up against the previous 70 mpg data point.

Thanks for the response! The only thing I changed on the bike is different grips. I can’t stay off the thing long enough for the gas to go bad lol. I wasn’t sure if anyone else had experienced something similar. I don’t know much about bikes honestly but my buddy mentioned it could need a valve adjustment. I find it hard to believe that it would so soon. It’s only got 800 miles.

its possible. the valves get tighter as they seat in, and this reduces clearance which can make it less efficient. also, are you riding it harder now then the 1st tank or 2?

Noticed lately when I start it cold it loads up with a raw gas smell and stops. Will restart I have to keep a little throttle to keep it going. And yes my fuel mileage has dropped from 130 to 85 with the same type of driving. Thinking fuel injection or sensor.

What fuel are you guys using? Cheapo fuel from "Bobs" quick stop? The fuel tank is small and it will not a huge volume of crap fuel to mess things up, just a bit from last years lawn mower gas can mess things up quick, fast and in a hurry.
