I personally have gone with the chinese ones. As long as the machining is good there's not much to improve on, IMO, not enough for the 2x premium on the goldplugs . This is the one I went with.

Regardless of what you go with give the magnet a good hard yank with a pair of pliers before installing. If it comes out, JB weld it in.

I have seen magnetic drain plugs from $7 to $35, does it matter what I get?
I went with the goldplug 15 months ago because several people on this forum said they definitely fit the Trail. I guess I could have saved a few bucks but didn't want to experiment, so I paid up. No regrets. It really catches a lot of crud.

The only issue I've heard of is the length of the plug. If it's too long it could hit the oil screen inside. I think I read somewhere that GoldPlug actually shortened their original bolt for the Trail because of that issue. (Don't quote me on that.) I don't know how long too long is on that bolt.

When I ordered the gold plug about 2 years ago, just after I got the bike in Dec. 21, (on Amazon afterseller I think), they asked for Make and model of bike to insure proper length( I called to ask why). So I guess there are proper lengths. Don't ask the cost, I have forgotten long ago but it seems $10 is about right. I've changed oil twice with a bit of filings coming each time. Looks fine compared to my older bikes when new.

I ordered the gold plug plus 5 extra washers with the plug. I showed John the service manager the picture showing all the filings on the plug. Results: There were no filings at 0 miles on my brand new Honda Trail 125.

Did my ~600 mile change tonight, the bigger piece isn't metal, all of the rest was that microscopic metal that's just mushy powder.
I'm all about getting the miles out of my oil life in cars and trucks but I change more often on bikes.
Considering how little it takes to change it, and how dirty the oil came out was, I won't be following the factory recommendations.
Probably a waste but you never know what you'll see when you're poking around down there!
