My wife and I chose the Mini Australian Shepherd as our dog breed when we first got married (full disclosure on that one is SHE chose that breed because Labradors were already my breed, but I am a dog guy so it really did not matter too much to me). With all of that being said we have two beautiful Blue Merle Mini Aussies. My young adult step daughter fell in love with one of the dogs and wanted to take it to college with her- that was a big NO. She graduated last spring and she is now in her first career job in the field of Civil Engineering. Three weeks ago she informed us she found a Mini Aussie puppy that reminded her of the one she loves here at the house. She rushed into it and put a deposit on the little guy and committed her heart to him.
Her job is on the Stanford campus so she lives with another family member in San Jose to avoid a wretched commute. When I asked her if her decision had been cleared by the other family member WELLLLLL, she asked if I could give her some pointers on how to pitch the puppy to the other family member. Just as I expected at this point the other family member promptly shot the puppy down and step daughter called me distraught. She had come to the realization her plan was bad all along and her emotions ran away with her. She asked if we could take the puppy in with a promise to come every weekend to partially raise her puppy, enroll in puppy training and stay here as our built in dog sitter whenever we leave town.
This is the third weekend of her "ownership". The first weekend she could only be here one night due to a work schedule, last weekend she was here to get up with the pup in the middle of the night and do all the things you do with a puppy. This weekend she came down with some virus that starts with a C and will not be here at all.
For all intents and purposes this little puppy is ours. We have him on a good sleep/feeding/potty schedule now. It is going as well as it can with a puppy you did not expect to have, but like I said, we are dog people and I am honestly really enjoying raising him and training him. Somehow she really lucked out and picked a great little dog. For now I feel like this puppy is mine, but I know there will come a time when she will get a place and take him with her- that will turn into a sad day around here.
Anyways- meet Merlin and daughter.
