IMO good gear protects you and keeps you comfortable. If you're comfortable in the stitch, use the stitch. If you're not, the nice thing is on such a slow moving vehicle the requirements for gear isn't very high.
Personally I'd focus on protecting my ankles (statistically frequently injured in low speeds offs) and getting hit by tree branches or rocks. After that, I'd focus on it preventing fatigue (e.g. warm when it's cold, cool when it's warm, preventing sunburn when it's sunny, etc.). The latter can be existing normal clothing under or over the armor, and the former is basically nice boots + something more than flesh-to-object. Hardly a bank breaking move, although you already own a 'stitch.
