Avoid the ones that attach directly to the tail lamp if you want actual protection, those are plastic with 3M tape to mount them for the appearance of a guard. Actual protection would come from a metal one with a proper mount point like @Cpd419 has pictured.

I did the same thing for the same reason. The one I bought was ~$80 on Amazon, all metal. I plan on installing it this weekend.
