I've been following along. Saw a few cameos of @G19Tony 's "183" CT125 so far.

For anyone looking for video content, here are a few accounts that have posted from the road to YouTube so far:

Much more on Instagram and Facebook

And the event info:

Our own @G19Tony is riding it! Windy as Hell in the AZ area, drove against the Race across America bike riders across the rez yesterday, ay least it appears to be at their backs!

I've been enjoying this, although the videos haven't exactly been the most exciting for me. JPow's are summaries at the end of the day, and DaBinChe's have been hyperlapse style videos. QuasiMotard hasn't done his videos yet and they're the ones I'm holding out for.

Some stats from the rider page:
There are 135 rookies (approx 2/3 of the field), 33 second time cannonballers, and 13 old timers that have done more than 3.
There are 5 Supercub riders and one @G19Tony on a CT125.
Oldest Scooter: 1979 Vespa P200
Most common including year: 2022 Honda ADV150 (13), 2021 Honda ADV150 (11), 2014 Honda Forza (7).
Most common (any year): Vespa GTS300 (36), Honda ADV150 (28), Honda Forza (10), Honda Helix (9), Yamaha SMax (8 + 1 with larger displacement - maybe a big bore kit?).
Most common makes: Honda (76), Vespa (66), Yamaha (14).
1/3 of all the riders come from: California (30), Arizona (21), Florida (12), Pennsylvania (10)
2/3 of the riders are: Automatic 150 class (70), Automatic 278 Class (65)

I was surprised so many people were using the 2014 Honda Forza. The other thing that was somewhat interesting was while I had no doubt Vespa would have a significant showing, to me the GTS as a platform yielded some interesting points:
  • The GTV is a variant of the GTS apparently, so if we consider that statistic the GTV300 and GTS300 combined rider count is 42,
  • If we're talking about similar knowledge and bikes where people are usually aware of small changes made between various years, the older GTS250 has an additional 6 riders and the GT200 has 3 more riders so the total running the GT/GTS platform is almost one quarter of the bikes in the Cannonball run.
At one point I used to think that Vespa's were full feature but you were paying mostly for the name, but the Cannonball run is making me think that there really is something to the brand.

I'm following it as in the back of my mind I toy with the idea doing it someday. Bonus that it started this year from the town where my GF lives, although we didn't go to watch the start as we had other things going on. Definitely a cool ride, gonna be curious to see how it goes!

QuasiMotard had a tech inspection video on YouTube but it's under "live" rather than "videos", there's another streaming now. I imagine the usual YouTubers may put together higher production quality videos after the event. Editing from the road can't be easy when you're already busy with the challenging and tiring ride, and using a small screen. I'm sure many would prefer to relax with the time they aren't riding, or enjoy the fruits of the event by talking to other riders or seeing what maintenance work or repairs others are doing. Parking lot wrenching can be quite a draw!

For a different long distance moto riding event, the Motorcycle Cross Country Chase, the event coordinators did daily live videos from some of the stops. Similar to what Scooter Cannonball does on Facebook Live, but they were longer and more of interviews with the riders. They also hired professional photographers and videographers to capture some of the event along the way for a recap video. The film crew riders had amazing skill. Picture someone riding a BMW R 18 B with the cruise control set, sitting side saddle, dragging a foot on the road for orientation, and looking at a camera screen or through the lens. Equal parts impressive and terrifying. I was really impressed by all the work they did planning and executing the event in a way where it was reasonably safe, fun, and got so many riders from the start to the finish. That's what any event hopes for. I'm on the support crew for a team entered in their other event this year, the Motorcycle Cannonball so have been prepping a motorcycle, myself, and logistics for that since March. Seeing how many riders there are in the Scooter Cannonball, I'm really blown away. Try grabbing a few buddies of different riding styles for a long distance group ride and you might feel it's like herding cats to get to the destination for the day. These events push an astounding number of riders from point A to B with checkpoints along the way.

There is a second CT125 in the Scooter Cannonball this year, rider #198. I imagine the large market share helps for the Vespas. Many folks already have them, it's easy to run what you own, and there's good parts and support for them. Having a common scooter would surely help in terms of other riders being able to lend a helping hand to work on it or share and exchange spare parts and tools.

QuasiMotard had a really bad start to the day with his scooter. Another rider who was out of the ride came back 3 hours to rescue him with spare parts. So he got a really late start today, probably 5 hours late...
To bad the live feed isn't really keeping up.

We just finished Day 4 in Guymon, OK. I’m the slowest bike in the field, but, I don’t mind. The goal was to see America at 40mph. I’m certainly doing that. I don’t think the trip would have been possible without the Corbin seat and backrest I sourced from WeBike. My Atlas throttle control fail. Man, I can’t feel my hand.

Before the start, I was betting on #5 DaBinChe. He is currently in 5th place, and has been moving up every day, but I think he will end up just a bit short on his Honda SH150i. #196 RiffRaff is in fourth place on a Super Cub, the highest 125 cc in the list. DaBinChe rode a Super Cub 125 last year to second place, after having a laydown in a gravel section.

Way to go! It's great to see a forum member out there! Had I known I would have been at the start to shake your hand and cheer you on!

I do hope QuasiMotard is able to get the CVT issues sorted out for good. His scoot had similar issues months before the event and he tried addressing it with new aftermarket components.

DaBinChe's dirt nap on day 2 looked like it hurt. Glad he's still rolling.

🐢 Right on! Safe travels and enjoy the sights.
If you can't get your hands on a replacement throttle lock, you can MacGyver the "Throttle Rocker" or "Crampbuster" style by cutting a palm paddle from a plastic food storage container and wrapping it with tape around the throttle grip. I dropped and lost one trying to roll it forward (to avoid engaging it) before entering a construction zone, came up with the storage container fix to save my wrist for the remainder of the trip.

Outstanding! Congrats on a successful, if somewhat painful, finish. Awaiting the complete report (what ever that is!)
well done.
