Hey guys, I am thinking about buying these saddlebags from Cycle Gear. Tomorrow's my birthday and my son gave me a gift card! I don't have a side rack, but I'm working on a light wooden frame for the left side. I'm just not sure about laying anything over the exhaust side. Do any of you know how these guys did it for their Alaska trek?

From the video it looked like they just had it hanging on the exhaust side and resting against the exhaust heat shield, nothing fancy to it.

IIRC in another video, resting stuff on the heat shield is fine, but if it gets under the heat shield it will melt the straps. It might have been SomeGuyRides on the TAT adventure, but I'm not going through 25+ hours of footage to find him talking about it.

Thanks, I thought it was just laying on the shield too. I guess that's allright. The mounting instructions for the bags say to strap it down to to some lower point like a rear footage mount. Any suggestions? I don't think it would be a good idea to go around the swingarm!

They're suggesting two points to strap it down to so it won't flop around. So the goal there really is "don't flap around" not "strap it down", especially if you're avoiding it going into the rear wheel or touching the hot exhaust.

I don't have any good suggestions, only bad ones. If the bags are sufficiently long with a stiff backing, they'll 1) drag on the ground and 2) the swingarm will prevent it from swinging into the wheel. Or if they're sufficiently short, they'll be too short to swing into the wheel (secure those straps though). Short is probably on the safer side. Aside from that, using one of those brackets that bolts to the toolkit mount and risking cracking the bracket seems to be the solution.

Attaching something to the swingarm... I can imagine all kinds of things going wrong, especially if the rider is fat like on my bike. That sounds like a 0/10 idea to me.

I got that side rack started. I picked up a single 20 liter bag, but might exchange it for the double setup. What do you think? I still need to round over all the sharp edges and paint it. I'm also going to try and add a metal support to attach to the tail light mounting screw.20220316_214743.jpg

I have a set of those bags also. I‘m going to use some adhesive heat resistant material I have and just stick it to the back of the right bag.

My solution is not as neat and tasteful as yours but this piece of plastic offcut does the job of stopping a bag “flapping“ into the wheel. In fact my bag has a pocket on the back that this slips into so it also stops it going the other way - not that 50mph max is going to cause an awful lot of movement!. Perhaps you could get your bag a bit lower by hanging from the rack itself - some heavy duty zip ties or similar might do?

I was talking to Naz Outfitters in Australia, because they have this wicked awesome set of panniers and I'm planning a trip back to see my grandparents in the near future (figured I might be able to save on shipping). Those panniers are incompatible with the CT125 right now for the same reason that we're experiencing a little PITA with how to mount this bag: there's definitely a market need for an actual pannier rack set for the CT125 that attaches on the upper rack properly, both sides of the bike, like you can get with other motorcycles. Right now we only have left side racks that attach to that tool kit mount, no right side mounts.

Seems the best option right now is to buy a second rack and beat it into a submission with a blowtorch and bits of metal if we want that dual sided pannier setup.

I traded up for the double pannier set. I added a brace to the tail light mounting screw and it's working great. Much stiffer. I still want to add some kind of insulator on the exhaust side, but I don't want to spend $20 for fiberglass tape!
Kritou I like your bracket. Simple and elegant. But I'd LOVE to have my bike in that color!

Could cut up aluminum cans for a heat shield, with the stock exhaust and engine it shouldn't get too hot where those might suffice.

One of many options on Rocky Mountain. 1000's of hard off-road miles with these (giant loop version) under the plastic number plate and the giant loop bags.
