Shift pattern Canada

Picked up the trail today. The shift pattern is 4 down, as in toe shift down to go up in gear, 1-2-3-4. The heal shifter changes down 4-3-2-1. Not sure why Canada gets the opposite of the US who are 4 up with the toe up. You would think all of North America would be the same?

To be honest it’s the down shifting that confuses the s*** out of me but I would still buy if I had known. So much fun! I’ve only done 50km so far. Love it! just different is all. Curious to know why we have different shift pattern to US

It's the USA one that is weird and non-cyclic only, and opposite shift direction.
AFAIK all other regions get the 4-step rotary shifter system. When stopped you can shift the bike directly from 4th to neutral, and even more awkward is that I believe it will let you shift from neutral directly to 4th - the Super Cub C125 for non-USA markets does as well.

Edit: Australia also has the non-rotary shift pattern, same as the USA

Yes, when stopped you can go from 4th to neutral but not while moving. Haven’t tried neutral to 4th. Still my curiosity is why would the US have a different pattern? I do think the US would be more in line with a traditional bike being that you shift up to go up in gear, except 1st. It has been over 20 years since I rode a cub In Scotland. To be honest I can’t remember the shift pattern. Whisky dulls the brain.

USA motorcycle control requirements call for toe up to get to higher gears (4th), toe down to get to lower gears (1st). That's likely why the Honda Trail 125 shift pattern is 4-up for the USA market.

It does beg the question as to why it was felt necessary to mandate a shift pattern rather than leave it to commercial bodies to choose - was there some safety issue at play?

A lack of standardized controls could be the safest issue. You can hop on any conforming USA motorcycle since the requirement and generally expect to understand where the critical controls may be and how to use them. Motorcycle controls were all over the place for many makes and years - foot shifters on the right side, throttle controls on the left, etc.

Other than the USA having gear changes opposite to the original design and not being able to rotate to neutral when stoped. Is there any other changes? Would be good for us in Canada to know as I do sometimes order parts from the USA.

Could it be that the new engine is that way?
The previous engines had the same shift pattern with the USA having different. Probably why they stopped selling the CUB in North America if the had to change the shift pattern just for that market. Only guessing here.

Comparing the 2023 USA and Canada models against each other it's not likely to be much difference beyond the shift pattern, stickers, the USA model having a spark arrestor, and the Canadian model having more spare fuses.

Between the 2023 (JA65) and the earlier model (JA55) there are many parts differences due to having a different engine and other smaller updates mentioned elsewhere on the forum.

One thing I noticed on my Canadian purchased bike is that the oil filler port and dipstick are one. In the youtube videos I've watched, the filler cap is up top and the dipstick is lower on the front part of the case.
Perhaps this is simply a 2023 change and unrelated to being sold in Canada?

The drain plug for the oil has a 12mm head, I believe the previous gen motor had a 17mm head.

I replaced with the MP01 gold plug which has a 17mm head. Bolt and threads are the same on the OEM just the head revised from a 17mm head to 12mm.

For you old guys, me included, with ankles too stiff to comfortably use your heel to shift the heal shifter, you could give this technique a try and use your toe instead. It worked for me, and it took only an hour or so of riding to become natural:

Yes, that is unrelated to it being sold in Canada. The videos you have been watching are of the older JA55 model. The easy to spot giveaway is the oil filter cover on the lower right side of the engine, and the cross bar in the silver engine guards. Both are missing in the older videos. The dipstick change happened with the change to the new engine to the JA65 model that you and the rest of the world are getting.
