Speedometer not working

Had trouble transitioning from a clutch moto to this semi-automatic Honda CT baby. This is my first bike but I learned on a reg motorcycle, so the downshifting has been an adjustment. Have 24miles on it, and now the speedometer is stuck at 0 miles per hour and the engine sounds odd. I’m pulled over and letting it cool down. Any thoughts?

Agree with @AZ7000' , bring it back to the dealer and have them sort it out. Unless you're hauling down a hill and then slamming it into a lower gear, there's really nothing the transmission shouldn't have been able to handle for 24 miles. It's a learner friendly bike, "engine sounds odd" could be a hint that something's wrong, riding it more might do more damage. Best to find out what's going on before proceeding. Call the dealer, tell them your predicament, the bike's likely still under factory warranty.

Thanks DMonkey. Would you know if the factory warranty is applicable to most honda motorsports dealers? I bought this out of state

(Definitely didn’t haul down a hill and then slam on the shifter to a lower gear, but I did have it jerk quite a few times already (I’ve read you need to give the throttle a blip and to smoothly transition the downshifting like you would a clutch).

Only thing I did different is wear new boots, and I tried out the heel shifter. And then I found myself in this situation, it sucks.)

The bike comes with one year "Unlimited-mileage, limited warranty". Any Honda Powersports authorized dealer or service center should be able to work with that within the same region you bought the bike (e.g. USA)

Down shifts are not as smooth as a bike with a manual clutch. I’m making progress though and getting smoother. Mine seems better not blipping it and down shifting with zero throttle. It feels right. We tortured the clutch less bikes as kids and never broke one. Hold the shifter down to create a neutral open the throttle and let go of the shifter. A CT wheelie. I’m surprised you may have hurt one.

I don’t feel like it was shifting correctly. The last couple weeks just driving around, the engine had a very smooth, almost quiet purr. Since the speedometer’s malfunctioned, I pulled over, put it in neutral, put it in first, hit the kill switch, took out the keys, turned it back on, and then just rode about half a mile back to my house.

Could just be my fear and imagination, but In that half mile, the bike sounded and felt more rumbly, a little janky…not as smooth while in first gear. **Not sure if I mentioned already, but the ABS had been blinking and on over 15 miles per hours and up to around 30 mph, around the time when this malfunction occurred.

I can tell you that on my 05 Electra Glide I installed an ultima 6 speed. The speed sensor was no longer picking up on the the gear in the trany and I had to buy a different sensor and a speedo recalibration unit. In the mean time it wasn't running correctly and every time I pulled the clutch in the motor would kill at an Idle. I believe the speed sensor may be tied to the fuel injection in the ecu. Maybe it's the same in the little Honda.

*update, if anyone in the future would like to know*

Dealer service was prickish and vague at times, but in the end, they fixed my trail in one week. After the third day they needed a Honda specialist to come in to diagnose the problem. Once finished, I got the phone call, and I picked up it. Service manager said, “there was a loose wire”.

So…go figure I guess. My baby is back, and she’s riding very smooth. Speedometer has no more issues. All’s well that ends well.
