Trail tyres

Fitted some Vee Rubber VRM-22 knobbies today in 2.75-17 size. A tight fit, decent tyre spoons recommended. Out of interest, I weighed the stock IRCs to compare and there was almost no weight difference: 2660 grams apiece +/- 20g. I did fit a heavy duty tube in the rear one, though. The Vee’s tread pattern is a very generic road/trail pattern similar to the IRC GP-1 and Kenda k270 and rated to 170 km/h. The sidewall indicates 6ply rating, vs the 4 ply stocker.

Rear wheel replacement is very fiddly with the chain adjusters inside the swingarm, the brake caliper carrier not well secured once the wheel is out and the long rear fender hampering access. At least the wheel isn’t very heavy to manoevre into position. I then managed to pinch flat the front tube while fitting it, not following the guide to slightly inflate and lightly talc the tube first. Handy to have that spare one from the rear still in arm’s reach after all. Looking forward to a test out on our wintery gravel roads soon.

Curious to see wha your impressions of them are. Vee rubber tires are in general notoriously bad in the rain on pavement. Maybe the knobbies are different. (hope so).

Certainly not expecting good wet road performance from them. Like all tyres, especially road/trail hybrids, there is a compromise. In this case it’s trading better mud/gravel performance and puncture resistance vs. on road grip and quietness. Retired Okie gives a good impression in his YT review under similar conditions to what we ride here…minus their monsoon season!

Any chance of a photo? Interested if they look more serious than stock!

Definitely an improvement in the gravel over stock rubber. Perfect conditions today but very hard to skid or break traction now.
One additional note: there are no lightest point markings on the sidewalls of the VRM022’s, so I used a couple of simple clamp-on wheel weights to achieve static balance (only 1 needed on the front with its stock tube).

How have these worked out long term? Anyone else running the Vee Rubber?
Have been though an Shinko 241 rear in a little over 1000km and looking to replace with a set of these.
Any long term review much appreciated :)
