Yeah, my money is on a bearing also. I am wondering if there's overheating in the mix also... On Saturday I measured 252 degrees in the sump through the dipstick hole, which is excessive AFAIK. On a ride the prior weekend I was noticing power loss and a bit of clatter from the top end after extended riding - both concerning.
So thankfully I was able to capture the sound on my ride on Saturday and that was convincing enough that my service advisor was willing to entertain the idea that it's not normal nor is it rider error. My service advisor was still not able notice the sound, but at least they're going to start digging into it. While consulting with a more experienced service advisor, I got a bit of credit for having rolled in on a 40 year old super cub/passport. It was nice to not be dismissed out of hand as not knowing what I'm talking about.
We'll see where things go from here. I'm going to try to be cautiously optimistic. I'm barely irritated so far, but If they continue trying to blow smoke up my ass and especially if they make me ride it til it blows up... they will find out what being professionally intractable looks like.
Now where things get interesting: I found a trick that might be useful for anyone else with a similar issue and needing to present evidence. If you put audio recordings in software that can generate a spectrograph (I've been using Audacity), you may be able to visually identify occurrences. For me the "precursor sound" has a frequency centered at 6800 hz and shows up as a line. Using this I was easily able to pick out every occurrence from Saturday's recordings as well as the ones previously.
