I'm not saying it's a great idea or even a good idea, I'm saying it's what happened 😂. I think it ties exactly into this statement:

The company itself says not to use it on bike chains as they require something that will provide longer lubrication and protection.

The chain was effectively being lubricated every 2 tanks of fuel. If it lasts more than a tank of fuel, and you're lubricating it every tank, then it's probably gonna work.

was being cleaned... wd isn't a lubricant, its a cleaner and water displacement chemical. hence the 'wd' . Im sure you know this, but a lot of people dont.

It's not what's being talked about here, but WD-40 do make "specialist" products other than the original multi-purpose spray. Their chain lubricant isn't marketed for powersports use in the USA, but WD-40 Specialist Roller Chain Lube is a suitable product for motorcycle chains. In other regions they have products that are better marketed for "motorbike" use.

I often use the multi-purpose spray as a chain cleaner and it's not a great one but it's okay, cheap, readily available, and you can sometimes find it in a very small can that travels well.

no one here thought it wasn't regular WD 40 being referred too. but I've used the multi purpose stuff for other things. it's ok.

That's the crux of their brand name being associated with their top product, they're known for and associated with their primary product to the point that it's a proprietary eponym.

Funny enough their bicycle products actually are more popular and well stocked at many bike shops, yet I know people who bicycle commute daily and just use the multi-use spray on their bicycle chain. Works well enough if it's a daily routine.
