I've got a gold plug in it now. Thought the fumoto might be nice for more frequent or on the road changes (scooter cannonball)

Looks very convenient. I am a klutz when it comes to oil changes and no matter how hard I try I end up making a mess.

But I don't want to give up this:

I considered running a Fumoto very early on as my earliest of early mods (before I had accepted delivery of the bike). The decision was Fumoto (more frequent changes) vs. Gold plug (better removal of material). I decided to go with the Gold Plug for long term reliability.

We had several guys using Fumoto plugs at my old workplace (in the general automotive slack channel). I chatted with them about it, and as owners who used Fumoto plugs they all recommended the little "clip" to lock it in place as a "I didn't accidentally leave it open did I?" mental check. A couple suggested getting the Fram SureDrain as an alternative.

The guys that actually did the Cannonball runs didn't use Fumoto's or express a desire to. It never sounded like draining the oil was a problem they had to worry too much about. I agree with @ShieldArc - it's not very difficult to do, and it's very fast. At worst you drop the bolt into the oil, but I'm getting pretty good at not doing that.

Additionally, we've already had several members point out that the screen is very close to the plug (to the point that GoldPlug shortened the MP-01 slightly). The Fumoto is unstested tech that may not actually fit on this bike.

That being said, if you're the first to install one, I'd love to know how it pans out for you. Just because it's always been done that way doesn't mean it has to keep being done that way.

I like the idea of them for other vehicles where it's a pain to get a wrench to the drain plug, but everything is very easy to access on the Trail 125... don't even need to pull the OEM skid plate to drain the oil. I don't know how much more the Fumoto would stick out than any other drain bolt head, but because the skid plate doesn't cover it I'd be worried brush, tall grass, or something could catch on the valve. I'd prefer the security of a regular drain bolt because of that.

I bought one for another bike I own, but never got around to installing it. From what I hear from people who have used them it makes draining the oil a very slow process. A buddy of mine took one off his V10-powered motorhome for that reason.

I'd just stick with the stock or the Gold Plug. Chances are pretty good you'll only have to change the oil once a year or so. I think the maint. interval on these bikes is 4K miles or once a year. Run a good quality oil, keep your air filter clean (if you ride off-road) and you should be fine.
