I've always been attracted to unique vehicles and bikes, something which a look in my garage would prove. Here in So.Cal. we have a large bike and car culture; lots of shows and rides almost every day of the week. I get tired of seeing the same type of cars and bikes over and over again. I enjoy showing-up to the weekly 'Cars & Coffee' meet in my area in something unique and different.

My choice of bikes runs much the same for similar reasons. I owned a Harley for a while but quickly determined it wasn't for me. A few years ago I was chatting with a girl who said she was into bikes (Harley's) and asked what I rode. I told her an Austrian V-Twin (KTM 990 Adventure).

I own a lot of vintage and fairly unique bikes. one i wanted for along, long time i finally got last year, and they never sold it here, and wanted JDM version. If somebody actually knows what it is when they see it, they are usually pretty floored there's one in states, especially in this factory livery, being ridden around. (yes thats all stock appearance from 1987).

however, id love to build one of these,
this is marks TZ750 and its one of 3 (i know of) street legal ones in the usa. THE holy grail of 2 strokes. I know, for a fact, just the motor, which had replacement cases and wasn't perfect, was 12k. Thats doesnt bother me too much, but the rest of it would be very hard to source . You show up on one of these and its basically game over for those who know. (this was last month at the 2t meet i attend and do know the owner). for thos ethat don't know, that's a 74, its a 4 cyl, and conservative 120 rwhp and 170+ mph on the straights of Indianapolis. doesn't sound too impressive compared to todays numbers.. but that was almost 50 years ago.

Neat bike M! Nice to see it's in the hands of someone who is taking good care of it!

Like M I also own a bike which was never sold here (to my knowledge). Mine is a '61 Honda Sports Cub 50. I've owned it since I was 15, it was given to me by a neighbor for helping to clean-out his garage. Reportedly it was bought new by a US Soldier who was stationed in Japan, ridden there for a while then brought to the states when that Soldier returned home. From what I've been told by various sources over the years the blue Sports Cubs were never sold here (the red ones were sold here). Also the US models didn't have the tiny turn signals mine does. Mine runs (or it did a year ago when I last took it out for a ride). Most of the time it just sits in my garage being the 'Elder Statesman' of my fleet. The long-term goal is to take the bike, my '63 Datsun 320 truck and '61 Arstocrat travel trailer to a show. Thus far that hasn't happened yet since I generally avoid day-long shows, but maybe someday. Here's a pic:

I'd find a 1984 Honda CB125S. Only ever seen one other for sale, but I love my single cylinder Hondas!

Maybe a Monkey too :)
A 79' Honda CB125 came across our So Cal CL ads but was gone by the time i called.
A 1977 Honda CT125 for me but 4 years in and still none that i have been able to find for sale.
A 1979 Yamaha RD400 Daytona Special is on the list to own before i can no longer ride.
The rest of the list is to log to post

daytonas are the absolute worst performing rd 400s out there in every way, im not kidding, just fyi, super over rated and wayyyy over priced. if youre hankering for a 400, get a 76-78 model and throw a daytona tank on. my .02 that second trail is sweet.

I always wanted a street smoker. You could barley give them away in the 80's. Now they are rare and expensive.

its a love hate thing w 2 strokes, they can be frustrating, 4 strokes are sooooooo much easier to dial in overall, but when you get a 2t running right, there's nothing else quite like it on the street. They are out there and can be had relatively cheap, a pretty darn nice 71 R5 just sold on marketplace for 3k, but it was nice and running, and lasted less than an hour before sold. But if you look and are willing to jump quick, you can find them reasonably. would i recommend it to anyone not willing to go all the way thru one? absolutely not, especially a 'restored' one or even more so ' a barn find that runs'. the latter are just ticking time bombs. whereas a 50 year old CB750 can pretty much have a carb cleaning and some minor stuff done and be ok to ride. (thats actually what i started with, CB750s)

I have a deposit on a Trail 125, expecting the bike toward the end of the year (possibly a 2024). This will be my first bike ever. The only other bike I was remotely considering was a Yamaha TW200. The TW200 might cover the offroad scenarios better, but for most expected uses I much prefer what I think the Trail 125 will offer.

I'm glad I got out of two strokes, just didn't feel great and while I'm super maintenance oriented I feel like running low on two stroke oil and burning a piston would totally happen. Love the high revs, hate the smoke / pollution.

For me, "thumper" two strokes are the best. Weird comparison, but I used to work for a small engine mechanic, and Stihl backpack blowers have such a fun exhaust note for a lawn appliance. We sold Husqvarna though so that's where my two stroke allegiance lies...

Should we limit this topic just to bikes? I have 4 wheeled things that would make this list...

thanks for offsetting my carbon footprint! lol. fwiw ive never killed a bike due to lack of oil in 30 years.

we just go this 78 400e back on the road since its been off the road since the late 80s. we have about 1.5x what a new trail costs new in it, and obviously haven't painted it yet. putting down over 60 at the rear wheel. mechanically, everything is new and we did ALL the labor aside from the cylinder porting. they'll only take my 2 strokes from my cold dead hands. (this one is actually my friend matts but I was heavily involved)

So this is my vintage bike. A 78 kz750 twin. its the only one I have ever seen, and I'm ok with that. Timage1.jpeghe 4 cylinder bikes were more popular, but I don't mind not being a cool kid.

Where I am in NC, I have been told of 1 other trail prowling the streets. Never seen em myself, so i can neither confirm or deny that they exist.

Any of yall around MCAS Cherry Point?

I wouldn't buy...I'd find a way to transplant a 200cc, 5-6 speed manual

get an old grom motor, fit a 5 speed trans and a 186 cyl kit. easiest way to do that (take it from somebody that's done transplant on a similar platform).

My friends keep asking when im going to put a 2t motocross motor in the trail. lol. (not going to happen)
