desire for peace but with the willingness for war (olive branches and arrows 13 each for the original states) is one but there are many more. Not trying to horn in on the post though.

Saved me the effort! I'm more familiar with the Australian coat of arms anyway. The only thing I'd add is E pluribus unum "out of many, one" has a pretty good Wikipedia entry as well.
