The 4th installment of my blog about the attempt has been published. No new information from what was posted here, really.
The Garmin thing is interesting. Typically Garmin is pretty good about intermittent power supplies, but the iPhone is not. One thing I noticed with the power delivery is that the USB to headlight mod does not provide a fairly constant level of power; under specific circumstances the power can drop, and if you're using a direct attach cable to the iPhone it will say there's water in the port. To get around this, using a wireless pad instead works great, but you could also use an inline battery with passthru charging capability or capacitor type situation in a holder strapped to the bars, whichever one is cheapest and easiest to install. Most battery packs don't have passthru anymore, and you might have lower charging wattage, but it will be constant power delivery.

I am trying to figure out how/why the front brake lever is tied to a RAM mount though?
Could be this mount:

The Garmin was connected directly to the battery through Garmin’s wiring harness.

This is the Ram mount that broke. It is a double-ball. Apparently you can have too many things attached to your handlebars

I’ll have a video out as soon as I get around to editing it but none of the ‘good’ stuff was captured.

That looks like a slightly different revision of the RAM ball mount that I have on my CT125 for a Garmin Zumo XT.

First I followed the provided instructions and mounted it to the front brake reservoir base:

I was not happy with that pass-through setup. The washers provided for it were too small so when I tightened the bolts they started sinking into the cheap metal. I believe the spacers for behind it may have been plastic as I recall not trusting them to not give way as I tried to achieve an appropriate clamping force to just keep the master cylinder from drooping. I scrapped that idea and ended up moving the RAM mount over to a Barkbuster clamp instead. Added some larger washers, and it fit well enough that the spacers behind the mount could be eliminated.

I haven't had any issues with that attachment setup yet, but I imagine that if it were to hit anything the cheap metal would break same as yours did. If I didn't find my handlebar bag extremely convenient I would probably switch to one of the handlebar top clamp RAM mounts instead.

Does the Montana 700i plug into a cable that's in the bracket, or are there pins permanently attached to the bracket? The Zumo XT bracket has a cable fed up into it, sandwiched between two plates, and screwed in place. Since it's a cable, it's flexible. Mine occasionally loses power on every motorcycle I've had it on, and the quick fix to restore power is jiggling the cable that feeds into it.

Those Ram mounts with the hole in the middle like you broke are very weak. I've had them break several times. Use the one like shown in SneakyDingo post above yours and it will not fail. Or at least not as easy.

To be fair, it doesn't break if you don't crash.

Including the doubletake mirrors, I had 6 RAM balls mounted for this trip. I had a relatively heavy powerbank attached to the center ball on this one which is likely what contributed the most to the failure. A gopro was attached to a 6" arm on the top ball.

The Garmin is attached elsewhere on a different ball. After the 3rd crash, it started charging again. It is the same style as the Zumo, just more pins. I never had an issue with my Zumo 396 but that was also mounted on a different bike.

I got some rethinkings to think for my entire bike setup.

I was checking on the online wagering sites... didn't see your trip, Ha!!! Would you be offended if we started a little wagering on how far you make it?? Closest to the final mile or "Price is Right" rule??

I don't mind. I'm going to keep success or failure on the actual attempt quiet until the video comes out. That real attempt probably won't be until this summer now. You've got plenty of time to get your bets in.

Man, I love the idea. I just don't think these things go fast enough to make 1000 in 24 hrs. Perfect roads, no slowdowns, eat on the fly, prob 8 fuel stops, find some time to eat and drink coffee. I'm rooting for ya! Wish you could do a live stream, that would be fun.
