Remember the stripped drain hole? I am back on the road!

As a reminder I am the guy who accidentally over torqued a Gold Plug magnetic plug onto the bottom of my 17 mile '23 and it came back to bite me at a 300 mile oil change with stripped threads: https://hondatrail125.com/index.php?threads/ugh-horrible-screw-up-stripped-oil-drain.2538/

So after lots of different suggestions by friends, family and some of you on here I opted to drill the stripped 12mm hole out to a 14mm and re-tap it. This of course meant I needed a 14mm plug so it was off to Gold Plug I went again. As part of this re-tap process I removed the right side case cover, this is where my troubles compounded. I was following a Youtuber's advice and I removed the lock washer for the clutch adjustment bolt along with all of the case bolts. I also left the bike standing up when I removed the case. Yep, you guessed it- when I removed the case a bunch of clutch parts (clutch lever, lifter plate, lifter cam and ball bearing retainer) all fell free. I had never seen the inside of these little engines before and I initially did not even know how these parts related to one another. Through a little web searching I did find some schematics and the relationship of all these parts to one another started making sense. As I put everything together though the adjustment bolt was tight and I could barely move it when I put the case cover back on. Out of curiosity I clicked the shifter from neutral to first and I heard an unusual clicking pop sound coming from the inside the case. I took the case back off and found the clutch lever had not been seated properly into its fitting in the case and it was now slightly disfigured where it was suppose to fit into the case. At this point I knew I was going to have to head off to the shop. Looking back I think I would have been much better off to have left the adjustment bolt locked in place the first time I removed the case cover AND to lay the bike on its side (again, this was a first attempt for me and I learned a lot after the fact).

I got the bike back from the shop today and it is running and shifting great. I am glad to have it back home and be back out on the roads with it!

Lots of lessons learned on this one!

Hey, how is that MSR bottle mounted? If other members have suggestions I would be interested. I want to start testing gas mileage soon and hence I need to bring fuel. I have an MSR bottle, and that seems like a perfect solution. Just need a good way to mount it. I like the idea of a vertical mount.

Don't run your bike to the point of MT often. The fuel pump can be damaged. The pump is kept cool and lubed by the fuel.

Good advise... however not sure what MT is... OK found that means Empty, should have known that...
My plan was to ride it until the indicator started blinking (essentially 1 liter remaining)... if that's below what's recommended I'll have to look at something else.

Hey guys. Yes, the mount is a Leopauto fire extinguisher mount. So far it has ridden well in the way I have it mounted. I had to go to the local hardware store to get better hose clamps than the flimsy ones it came with. I also used a split hose wrapped around the engine guard to let the clamps get more bite, prevent rotation and protect the finish on the guard.

I didn’t even know about the extinguisher mounts. I got a few of these.

I already had a few MSR bottles, and figured these could work for the Trail as well as for the FJ and ST. I’ve ridden both the FJ and ST (35 to 50 mpg) and entered a state (New Mexico) where I think I’m fine, then find I don’t see a fuel stop for 100+ miles. On a highway!

We have completely trashed FishWishin's thread... but I just ran donkey down to "blink"... 126 miles... looks like that would in general mean I burned 1.11 gallons of fuel, and so basically 113.5 MPG. I was actually hoping for something slightly better, but I have a big crate on donkey, and I carry stuff around on a regular basis... and with all my clothes/gear I'm probably approaching 200 lbs... 180 in the birthday suit. But I wear all the gear, all the time... guess I could put myself on the scale, and see. My jacket alone is over 5 lbs. But compared to 15MPG in my truck, I have zero complaints. :)

On my ride today I actually had to herd cattle... some farmers cows got out, and people were trying unsuccessfully to encourage them back into the field... A crazy demon on a donkey with a horn got them moving... they couldn't get back home fast enough. :)

Haha! Yeah kinda, but I am also ok with that. Given the stupidity of my original mistake I wanted to make sure I did a follow-up report on it, but I am glad to share the limelight with fuel and MPG topics to mask my errors :ROFLMAO: ⛽🔩
