I found a collapsible crate at Costco ("InstaCrate") and having a red top rim option knew I had to try it. Works pretty good mounted to the 4-6mx1.00 threaded holes in the stock rack with a garden kneeling pad between it and the rack to save the paint. It also allows me to keep my 30L moto bag mounted on top when it's not in use and able to hold it if I need the crate and have room or can be strapped on as a backpack if the full crate is needed.View attachment 5469

I picked up one of these at Costco yesterday. I don't know if I'll use it or not but for $8, you can't really go wrong.

I was thinking of buying one of these, if I can ever find one, just wondering what bags/baskets/carriers/panniers that people are using on the rear rack. If I bought one of these I would like to be able to easily use it to a little bit of running errands, or maybe going to a park and bringing some stuff, or maybe delivering for Uber Eats.

I used the factory M6x1 weld nuts on the rack and a piece of aluminum stock with holes drilled in it to clamp down my record crate. Be sure to run a tap through the weld nuts to cut the paint away first. Simple yet effective!

This has been my setup for the last 6 months. I call it my truck, I use this harder than most folks use their actual trucks. It even has a tailgate. Also has additional tail/brake/turn lights mounted near the top for increased visibility. Some day, I'd like to replace it with an custom aluminum wire basket in similar form to reduce weight, but that's a ways off.

I picked up a 12"x18" 26ga steel sheet yesterday. I'm going to put that in the bottom of the collapsible crate before mounting to give it a bit more structural support. I haven't decided if I am going to put something between the crate and the rack. Either the crate contact will mar the paint or dirt will get trapped between the rack and whatever I put there and mar the paint. I could vinyl-wrap the rack but I don't have the patience for that.

And a Type 181 Kubelwagon??? Dude! That's the ultimate off road machine.
Thanks. The Thing is fun. I don't drive it as much I should. Needs some work. Funny, the husband can rebuild our off road race car in three weeks, but my Thing has been sitting for years. Can't complain though, he came home with the CT125 for me the other day. Surprise! So fun, I love it. Now I need to figure out a good was to carry fishing poles.

There's a few racks for that, but the ol' PVC pipe trick might also work depending on the type and length of the poles. Or you know, maybe a good excuse to go get that Tenkara Rod you've been eying off...

Evercare makes a collapsible crate 46L or 6 one gallon milk jugs. Folds down to about 1”. However, they only come in a three pack, but have different colors to chose from. Bolt down through the rear rack and you are good to go. I added a backpack cover and a binge cargo net to complete. Amazon has it all.

One milk crate, one Wald bicycle basket. Both with fake grass for the dog!

How big of a dog can you fit? I have a boxer and a border collie who used to go sidecar riding with me. I’d sure love to take them to the park (one at a time… lol) on the back of the Honda Trail.
