Well dang. I just posted about the classifieds. Guess we will not have a chance at his bike.

This eBay/alababa/beezeeals shift indicators don’t work on 2023 ja65 trails. The harness is different now and the stock magnet part seems to already be able to read the gear of the stock gauge could read it - some hidden menu??
Hi there. Mine is a 2023 with the oil filter. I have purchased this one and am about to install per the instruction video above. You saying this won't work now for real??

The listing says for 2023 (not sure if that means anything): https://www.ebay.ca/itm/204437680622

Anyone with experience on this would be appreciated this is my first attempt something like this on a bike.

Yeah I bought the same one for the 2023 on Alibaba and the sensor now plugs in differently to the harness. I think it needs a splitter with two harnesses now. You are smarter than me alibaba refuses to help me return it oh well. If anyone wants one for their ja55 bikes let me know.

Really appreciate the insights guys. I managed to return this part (somehow they agreed and acknowledged it was not compatible with 2023 version).

Anyone know of a different part that will work? Don't want to go full OPMID (if that even fits now) just to indicate gear...

So is there one that works for the 2023 model on the market yet? I’m a super-noob and this is my first bike with a shifter so I know I need some kind of indicator to remind me of what gear I’m in, at least for the first few hundred miles.

I’m trying to decide if it makes more sense to just get a cheap gear indicator as a memory check or to go the full Opmid cluster route so I can see my revs… Any thoughts on which would be more useful for a new rider who thinks he may eventually move up to bigger adventure bikes?

seat time. you'll learn in a hurry by feel.
True.... I still try to shift into phantom 5th from time to time. Might be because the other bike that gets ridden much is going 55mph in 4th @ 3000 RPM and there is another gear left:unsure: I don't think a gear indicator would help me I bet I'd still reach for another gear @ 7000rpm after ridding the other bike.:ROFLMAO:

What m in sc said.. "more seat time" and you won't need it or look at it. There is nothing wrong with looking for fifth to make sure you are in fourth.

I would stay away from an Opmid cluster or extra gear indicator for a new rider' they may become distractions which could get you hurt.

As M said, seat time. Start small; go ride around in empty parking lots, small neighborhood streets, then move onto busier roads and places as your skill and confidence increases.

Most of all just get out there and enjoy your new bike! Find reasons to go for a ride, even if it's just a quick one to run an errand. These are fun bikes but do take a little getting used to.

I like the OPMID cluster and gear indicator, and it's one of the top mods on the bike, but IMO just the gear indicator isn't a good reason to get it (#1 ability to see the speedometer, #2 speed correction when changing gearing, #3 tachometer). Plus the gear indicator doesn't quite work how you expect it to either. If it were software it'd be buggy software.

Honda has some shift guidelines in their manual. Start there and work your way up. The rest I'd agree with @Kev250R, but I'd also add "revisit the parking lot exercises even when you're experienced." You'll use your low speed skills on every ride you ever do, even if only a little, and being able to basically balance at a standstill is an awesome skill to show off.

Do they make the Opmid for the ‘23 model yet? Looking online I’m only seeing ones that specify working with the ‘21-‘22 model.

The part number for the 2023 JA65 compatible OPMID meter is M1208, but you might not be able to find it offered with shipping to the USA yet. (It sounds like there are production delays per https://opmid.co.jp/?page_id=2756 )
The 21-22 model meter can be made to work either by splicing wires or buying their oil drain bolt that has a temp sensor adhered into it. More detail on that here:

Here's a video on that drain bolt temp sensor install:

IMO the way they designed the sensor to be fixed to the drain bolt rather than removable from it like others, and where the wiring connector ends up being positioned, are not a great design.

Oof, yeah, not a fan of that since I was planning to get the gold plug…

This is the first “motorcycle” I’ve owned so I can tell that learning to shift is going to be difficult. Everything I’ve owned before this was some variety of clutchless scooter or moped with a throttle and dual hand brakes so I’m not used to needing to think about what I’m doing with my feet at all 😅

I wouldn't expect shifting to be difficult just because you haven't had to do it before; honestly after just a couple of rides it'll likely become second nature. Most things in life are like that.

Back in the day, Honda used to mark some of their MC speedometers with numbers where you should shift at. Wouldn't it be cool if Honda made the digital Speedo on our Trails Blink or change colors when you are (supposed to) change gears? Might be useful for new riders, as long as it could be turned-off for those who don't want it.
