Recently acquired a 2023 CT 125. Where is the best place to keep the registration on the bike?

The only storage container that the CT125 comes with is the tool box on the left side under the rear carrier rack. The tool box opens with the hex key clipped to the top of the fuel tank under the seat. Not sure if Honda did anything to fix it on the updated 2023, but the tool box can pop open while riding. You can add something like a reusable zip-tie to it to secure it and fix that issue, making it suitable for keeping the registration in.

I added an under-plate storage box on my CT125 for registration and insurance.

I got a silicone credit card holder gor cell phones, and stuck it under the seat. I sandwiched my registration & insurance card between 2 cards there. Holds tight, easily accessed, but still need a key to get there

Under the seat in a Zip Lock baggie or I added a (now-recalled) Yeti dry bag to the left-hand rear side of my Trail where I keep it.

on my phone and under my seat
I forgot about that. I also have a digital copy. Our state laws are kind of interesting, in that they also allow for our vehicle registration papers to have the address removed.

Harbor Freight ran a sale on their "Apache" protective equipment cases for $10 off, so I popped for one that is almost the same size as the rear rack on the CT 125. I got it mounted on the rack, so there is a place for my documents, phone, tools and other small items. The box is heavy duty, dust and water proof and even looks good on the bike.

I leave it at home. I got a license plate. They can run that and my DL and get the same info.
Only ever been asked one time in 52 years of driving. Told the cop I don't carry it run the plate. No problem.

I guess it depends on where you live but here in CA I believe it's a law that you have to be able to produce your registration and proof of insurance (or a copy thereof, digital copies on a phone are okay too) upon demand of a Peace Officer.

For me it's just easier to have a copy in each vehicle I own. I get pulled-over and they want to see it, here you go. No hassle with explaining why I don't have it or digging around looking for it. Makes it easier if someone else is driving one of my cars too.

Can I assume from this that it's generally compulsory for you to have to carry your documents with you when on/ in and in charge of a motor vehicle?
Or is it like lots of the vehicle/ helmet/ road laws that vary between each state?

Driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance are what I've been asked for in the USA and what you'll find in almost any traffic stop recording. I'm with @Kev250R in that I'd rather just have the physical documents on hand than worry about what's legally required wherever I'm at. Don't create a hassle for yourself by giving the officer reason to write you a ticket when it can easily be avoided.

I recall seeing a member, or someone on youtube velcro a plastic back under the seat. Then put the bag that the owners manual came with along with your registration and insurance inside there.
I copied this method from that Youtuber and it's perfect. Of course if your bike goes off a ravine so does your papers..
