Shift lever

I solved my shift lever problem. The metal is easy to bend side to side, so I straightened out both sections and rotated it to raise the toe part. Now the heel is out of the way but available if desired and my boot fits under the toe part. This really increased my riding pleasure.

My boot size is 10.5 and would like to know if you think I can’t get toe portion of lever moved up enough to get under to shift based on your recent success?
thanks!

I have a brand new one that I got Yesterday and I think I goofed and failed at getting the longer one. like an inch too short. Really nice piece, but no workie. I too bent the heel shift out of the way. 11.5 E work boots were snagging the heel shifter. not any more!

So I have an update on the shifter. A guy called jeff sent me out the head of the shifter that had the twenty millimeter extension on it. I got everything swapped and installed and i'm not completely sold. It still isn't as long as the stock one. And I am wearing steel toe boots for work, That are eleven and a half wide. Still not as comfortable to get underneath for up shifts. It has a little more room Don't get me wrong, but not really enough.

I'm going to give give it a few days and see how I like it and if I do not. I might put my stock back on.

That was my experience when riding someone else's bike with a hammerhead style shifter. I didn't like how difficult it was to get my boot underneath for the upshifts. He rode in what was effectively loafers, so my boot had much more verticality to his footwear, and my US-12 boots had difficulty getting up underneath. That's why I've stuck with the stock shifter. For reference I'm using the BMW Motorrad boots.

I am actively going to try to give it a couple of days but I'm not sure about it. I don't ride without my boots, so it's sort of kind of a mandatory thing. It fit right properly.

1 tooth 2 tooth 3 tooth ah ah ah ah.
Yea did that. I think 5-10 mm longer would be perfect. If I don't dig this thing it will need a new home.

I tried to adjust the shifter last night. I loosened the bolt and spread the clamp a bit but I can only get the dang thing to slide about half way off the spline. I found myself with a catspaw in my hand and decided I better consult the professionals before breaking out the carpentry tools on my brand new bike. Any tips for getting the shifter off the spline?

The shifter spline is also notched where the bolt slides in. Even when the bolt is loosened and not pinching/clamping the gear shifter halves against the spline, the bolt prevents the gear shifter from sliding off. Here's a section from the parts diagram to illustrate what that looks like.

To be certain just entirely remove the bolt. After that I have had luck wiggling the shifter up and down a bit while pulling it outward to remove it. If the bolt is inserted enough to be seen in the pinch split area on the underside of the shifter, then it's in a place where it can make contact with the notch that retains it on the shifter spline.

You may also find yourself needing to loosen the 4 bolts on the underside of the Trail that hold the foot peg/step perches in place, so that you can push the left side foot peg down a small amount to make room to slide the shifter off the spline. It's a good idea to have the motorcycle on the center stand for this.
