Was considering trading up for a 2023 CRF300 Rally ABS... My Trail is 2021, 2700 miles, all stock, perfect condition. Was offered ~$2000 trade value by Honda dealer, without them seeing it. Is that as insulting as it seems, or am I off base? I know trade values will be less, and I know the dealer wants/needs to make money, but $2000! Just saw a Craigslist ad for a 1981 Trail 110 for $3K.

Curious if anyone here has traded and gotten a reasonable offer. And don't worry, I will keep the Trail if it is only worth that much in trade.
Well when a new 2024 will probably list for $3999. What do you think he can get for a 3 year old one? They were scarce, not now, motorcycle sales are slow and things are setting on the floor. He's got money invested in his used inventory, it cost him out of his pocket every day it sets there.
It's simple, sell it out right if you don't like his price.

In my experience it's rare to ever be offered a decent price for a vehicle trade in unless the demand for that vehicle is exceptionally high, as was the case for many vehicles earlier in the pandemic.
Don't be insulted by it, that's just how they're doing business, managing risk, and making a profit. You'll do better selling it private party. Sometimes there is a financial advantage to trading in a used vehicle on a new vehicle where you don't pay taxes on the value of the old vehicle, that's probably not worth it in this scenario though.

Sounds a little insulting to me lol. I sold mine straight out for either $4000 or $4200 I’ve kinda forgotten. I had put a couple extra on it that probably amounted to around $200. Mine had 3060 miles on it. I know dealerships want to make money but that’s not enough in my opinion if the bike is in good shape. Mine still looked factory floor new almost.

typically when you trade in you pay 2x the markup. take this with a grain of salt, id aim for 2700 at least.

$2K is too low, he should be between $2500-$3K. He will get damn near $4K out of the used unit if not more in most markets as there will likely be aftermarket adds and no freight/prep/setup fees associated. I am kicking around the idea of selling mine and I wouldn't take less than mid fours for it with the $600 in adds and only 250 miles on it.

You always take it in the shorts when you trade into a dealer. The question is how much. The advantage is it's easy to ride in on the old ride , ride out on the new. The market is a little softer on the 125 than it has been so it is not likely somebody is going to snap up a used unit for a at near new price. Remember the 2023 ct has been upgraded nicking the value of the pre-oil filter units a bit. I imagine $3000 if you want to move it quickly. Being in stock configuration is an advantage ,a person rarely gets much return on do dada and add ons.

I genuinely appreciate everyone's feedback. I suppose in hindsight, a dealer would need to make at least ~$1500 on a trade in bike to make it worthwhile. I'm in sales too and I pass on deals, unless there is that much in it for me! The problem is that for a $3000-$4000 bike, that is a lot to give up for "convenience." My curiosity has been satisfied. I will probably just keep it or sell it on my own - not afraid of that. However, I am starting to see why so many of you have 5-10 bikes in your garage - You can't get what you know they're worth, AND there is always something new/different out there that appeals!

Humorous anecdote:
I was optimistic enough that I would work out a deal (neither the trade-in or new bike outright worked out), that I put the factory seat back on the bike and took it for a <10 minute ride around the neighborhood. MERCY that factory seat sucks! If anyone is on here and still on the fence about a seat upgrade, just do it - you will be glad you did.

If I would have kept mine I would have done something about the seat. That seat sucks, lol. About 2 hours of riding and my butt was getting sore. I guess more CTs are in the market now so the price has probably came down on them a bit used since I sold mine. By the way. Other than being a little on the tall side I like my CRF300. I can run the speed limit anywhere on this one, and it still averages about 85mpg.

Rackbid, not sure if you still have the 21 model, but a quick check on cycle trader shows 21 models with less than 500 miles on them going for $3800 to $4300. With your mileage I'm not surprised they offered you $2000, they'll probably sell it for $3500. If I were you I'd sell it privately.

Mine sucked until I did the mods. I love it now! I would ask where you are located, but I have three bikes now, with one I have yet to mod. For about 800 bucks you can turn that thing into a MOTORCYCLE! Do that, and wait. You will want to keep it then.

3800 bucks in a trade for new bike at retail would be a good deal for them. They will not lose any money.

Last year 3500 would be a ok deal for them, this year 3000 would be about the max they could go and still be worth it for them IMO. They are in business to make a profit not break even.

Here in So.Cal. used Trails are still asking in the neighborhood $6K. There are two on Craigs List local to me for that much. Crazy. However with gas prices being what they are, used MC prices typically rise as well.

Yep and that's why I ended up paying ADM for a new one.

I was told by someone who will remain nameless but am married to that used motorcycles in SoCal were cheap. I have lived here since 2016 and I have yet to see it.

Yep, I've heard the same thing. VW's too. Everyone thinks they can pick-up an old air-cooled Bug for $500

It's definitly a 'Sellers Market' for just about everything here in So.Cal.

Not so here in Texas, the tide is turning and prices are falling on all things, especially on the second hand market. The early signs of a massive economic shift are already present.

I find this thought process funny.... It is worth what a buyer pays, no more, no less.

I've been sitting on my kids Husqvarna TC-65 for 7 months, I had to drive 400 miles each way and paid "over value" or what it was worth to me. Mini's used to be hard to find used and sell in a week. Now, in AZ, not so much... It is apparently worth way less then I am trying to sell it for!
