as far as importers, theres companies that already buy from some of these suppliers here in the US, the monkey, grom and supercub stuff in particular. there isn't enough demand here to stock this stuff for the trail though.

as far as shipping, i buy a LOT of stuff from overseas, one shop in particular in the UK for vintage yamahas, including vehicles they never sold in the states, and none that have been made in the past 30 years FedEx is 21 bucks shipping every single time, and i get it in less than 5 days every time, and these are NEW made parts, not new old stock. Its a (lack of market) demand thing, plain and simple. shit, im still waiting for the clutch part from Malaysia, its been sitting in outbound for 3 weeks.

Today I called a dealer near me to try and secure the just announced green 2023 model (whenever they come in) and this is what the quoted price breakdown will be that they gave me.

2023 Trail 125 MSRP............$3,999

Freight from Honda..................$300

Assembly/prep..........................$350

Pa tax....................................$278.94

Pa tag/title etc...........................$210

Our title clerk fee........................$170

Grand total............................$5307.94
I would take that deal as-is. With a new model, with some desirable upgrades I think demand for these bikes is going to spike again. A year ago Dealers in So.Cal. were asking (and probably getting) as much as $6,500 for these bikes! I was happy to pay $5K for a used one with 800 miles on it.

That $300 freight is set by American Honda and listed on their website as the destination charge + freight surcharge.

From what you listed the Assembly/prep should be negotiable, many dealers don't charge that. I'd ask them to knock the whole $350 off, if they don't want to haggle it's just a matter of how much you really want the bike and if you'd honestly pass on it for that extra $350. If you don't pay it the dealer has an advantage that someone else might since it's a bike with wait lists at many dealers.
I just went through the "dealer prep" fee runaround on the purchase of a KTM. It seems all dealers have now adopted the practice of adding in prep fees, which if being truthful should just be labeled "dealer markup," but that doesn't sound quite as nice, and then they couldn't defend it as well. Some of these fees are stupid high too. $350 is on the low end. I've had prep fees quoted as high as $899 just two months back (again, on a KTM, not a Honda). The dealer I bought the Trail from back in 2021 didn't have any prep fee at all, I'm curious what they are doing today...

Amazingly, of the 5 or so KTM dealers I had quote me, 3 of the 5 stood completely firm on their pricing and after hanging up I never heard from them again. Two of them worked with me and in the end I suggest throwing out an OTD number (don't dwell on the prep fee itself) and tell them that gets them the deposit today. Worst case they decline, best case you save yourself a few bucks. YOU have to throw out the number though, nobody ever just drops their price without an offer being thrown out by you, in my experience.

After it's all done don't look back. Somebody else is always going to get a better deal, that's not what matters most, or at least it shouldn't.

My KTM/Husky/GasGas dealer doesn't charge freight or prep, ever! There are a few others in the state that do the same. It doesn't have to be a standard or mandatory thing.

That just means its cooked into the price already, which is good because it can keep the greedy dealers a bit more in line, but, you're still paying for it.

Consider yourself lucky, that is not the norm around me, at least not right now, and not for the dealers I talked to.

I totally agree it's not standard or mandatory, it's business. I assume that if I'm a dealer and every other dealer around is charging the same extras the assumption is "I can too." Theoretically this will shift if demand drops.

Agreed, even at MSRP or below, there's always a margin.

I got a quote on a New Honda Trail 125 - $3,899 PLUS $1,298 for freight and set up. That seemed high to me... Thoughts?

Southern Honda near Chattanooga, Tennessee, sells all their motorcycles‘s at MSRP without any mark ups whatsoever. I bought my Honda Trail there for just over $4200 about four months ago.

I would totally do that but I'm on the west coast. Can't imagine they'd be able to deal over the phone and then ship it to me.

OTD price in my area for a 23 model is $6473, however I'm in Canada so that's just under $4900 for you lads.

Just picked mine up two days ago, in Iowa. I paid 4973 otd. That was the price they quoted, and they didn’t budge.

Was considering trading up for a 2023 CRF300 Rally ABS... My Trail is 2021, 2700 miles, all stock, perfect condition. Was offered ~$2000 trade value by Honda dealer, without them seeing it. Is that as insulting as it seems, or am I off base? I know trade values will be less, and I know the dealer wants/needs to make money, but $2000! Just saw a Craigslist ad for a 1981 Trail 110 for $3K.

Curious if anyone here has traded and gotten a reasonable offer. And don't worry, I will keep the Trail if it is only worth that much in trade.
